Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies the absolute authority of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam by establishing it as the natural, original, and personal commentary on the Vedānta-sūtra. Kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyana Vyāsadeva is the compiler of the vast Vedic literatures, including the philosophical aphorisms of the Brahma-sūtra (Vedānta-sūtra). Knowing that in the age of Kali unscrupulous people, particularly Māyāvādīs like Śaṅkarācārya, would misinterpret these aphorisms to promote impersonalist philosophies, Vyāsadeva purposely wrote his own commentary. Under the direct instruction of his spiritual master, Nārada Muni, and in the full maturity of his spiritual realization, Vyāsadeva composed the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Because the author himself explains his own sutras, beginning with "janmādy asya yataḥ," the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is the final and perfect conclusion of all Vedic knowledge, superseding any other commentary.

  • The Author's Prerogative: Vyāsadeva is the original author of the Vedānta-sūtra, and therefore his own personal commentary on it carries the highest authority and reveals his true intentions.
  • Protection from Misinterpretation: Foreseeing that rascals and impersonalist philosophers would twist the meaning of the Vedānta, Vyāsadeva deliberately wrote the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam to protect the pure Vaiṣṇava conclusion.
  • The Natural Commentary: The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is considered the "natural" commentary because it directly expands upon the aphorisms of the Brahma-sūtra, perfectly aligning with the author's original philosophical thesis.
  • Compiled in Maturity: Vyāsadeva wrote the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam after achieving complete spiritual maturity, having been guided by his spiritual master, Nārada Muni, to focus exclusively on the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • The Gaudiya Vaiṣṇava Stance: Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu and the Gaudiya sampradāya did not write a separate commentary on the Vedānta-sūtra because they accept the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam as the perfect and sufficient explanation.
