Theme Analysis
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the desire to "want God" exists in various degrees of purity. For the atheist, the idea of God is avoided because it brings the "risk of punishment" for sinful activities. For the common religionist, God is often wanted merely as an "order-supplier" to fulfill material needs. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the highest perfection of this desire is found in the pure devotee, who wants nothing for personal benefit but simply seeks to be "enjoyed" by the Lord through eternal service. Kṛṣṇa is omnipresent and available under any circumstances; if one is sincere and attached to devotional service, the Lord reveals Himself from within and without. Ultimately, wanting God means wanting to hear His glories perpetually, as exemplified by Vidura, who was never satiated by the transcendental narrations of the Lord's pastimes.
- The Sincerity of the Search: As soon as a person becomes sincere in their desire for God, Kṛṣṇa responds by providing help from both within the heart and through the external guidance of the spiritual master.
- Moving Beyond the Order-Supplier: Most people want God to serve them as a father or a provider, but a Vaiṣṇava seeks the opposite—to offer everything to Kṛṣṇa and to be used for His pleasure.
- God is Known Through Service: Speculative research or a "teeny brain" can only produce a vague or impersonal idea of the Absolute. To know God in truth, one must take to the practical activities of devotional service.
- The Transcendental Nature of Hearing: Those who truly want the favor of the Lord are never tired of hearing His activities. This constant attachment to hearing and chanting ensures that the Lord remains always present in the heart.
