Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the desire for Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the original and most natural state of the living entity. While the material world is full of people wanting profit, followers, or even liberation, the mahātmās and pure devotees simply want Kṛṣṇa and His association. This desire is not a mundane ambition but the highest perfection of life. Kṛṣṇa is so kind that He reciprocates with every soul exactly according to their intensity of love and the specific humor in which they approach Him—whether as a master, friend, son, or lover. If a person is sincere and develops the eagerness to catch Kṛṣṇa, the Lord responds from within the heart and through His external representative, the guru. Ultimately, wanting Kṛṣṇa means a total absence of material hankerings, where the soul is fully satisfied to be enjoyed by the Lord rather than attempting to be the enjoyer.

  • The Determination of Mahātmās: Great souls do not care for material opulence or soldiers; like Arjuna, they want simply the friendship and presence of Kṛṣṇa, even if He does not fight on their behalf.
  • Reciprocation According to Desire: Kṛṣṇa is atmarāma and self-sufficient, yet He agrees to fulfill the specific desires of His devotees. He becomes a husband to the gopīs or a son to Yasodā because they want Him in those particular roles.
  • The Sincerity of Eagerness: Real spiritual progress is not checked by any material impediment. The only requirement is the development of a sincere eagerness to have Kṛṣṇa, which causes the Lord to respond from both within and without.
  • The Highest Perfection of Life: Constantly thinking of Kṛṣṇa and wanting to see Him happy is the peak of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. This state of consciousness renders the entire world vacant for want of the Lord's association.
