Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the modern civilization is driven by an insatiable hunger for wealth. While a basic amount of money is required to maintain the body and cultivate spiritual life, people today want money unlimitedly to satisfy their ever-growing desires for sense gratification. This intense greed traps the living entity in a cycle of illusion, leading to cheating, criminal activities, and exploitation by corrupt governments. Even when people approach God or demigods out of financial distress, their mentality remains rooted in the material concept of life. In contrast, a pure Vaiṣṇava follows the standard set by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, completely rejecting the desire for material wealth. By taking to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, true happiness is awakened, and the feverish endeavor for money is naturally neglected, as the Supreme Lord automatically provides for His sincere devotees.

  • The Snare of Sense Gratification: Driven by lust and greed, people are never satisfied, even if they become millionaires. The desire for money forces them into sinful and criminal activities just to maintain their families and fund their sense enjoyment.
  • The Illusion of Unlimited Wealth: Society is no longer content with simple living. This constant want of money creates a nonsense civilization full of frustration, where citizens are endlessly exploited by incompetent leaders.
  • Approaching God for Wealth: Those in distress often turn to religion or demigod worship for financial relief. While this is a pious beginning, it keeps the practitioner in the material concept of life rather than on the platform of pure devotion.
  • The Vaiṣṇava Standard of Renunciation: A genuine devotee does not want material wealth. When money is acquired, it is used strictly to build temples and spread spiritual knowledge, proving that true happiness comes from serving Kṛṣṇa, not from hoarding money.
