Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Śrī Kṛṣṇa, as the Supersoul within the heart, is the witness of every living entity's desires. Because the Lord is supremely kind and equal to all, He provides the necessary facilities for both devotees and nondevotees to fulfill their specific hankerings. However, there is a profound distinction in how Kṛṣṇa responds to these desires. To the materialists or the karmīs, He grants material opulence or even liberation, which can often lead to further entanglement. For the sincere devotee, Kṛṣṇa’s primary consideration is their spiritual progress; He fulfills their needs while ensuring they do not receive anything detrimental to their devotional service. Ultimately, the maturity of spiritual life is reached when the soul, like Dhruva Mahārāja, moves from wanting material benedictions to wanting nothing but the eternal service of the Lord.

  • The Provider in the Heart: Kṛṣṇa sits within the heart as a witnessing bird, aware of every desire. He is so kind that He grants the living entity the chance to act out those desires by providing the required facilities.
  • Supplying Desires for All: As the supreme controller, Kṛṣṇa is equal to everyone. Whether one wants to be a demon or a devotee, the Lord rewards them accordingly, though He warns that material pursuits never lead to true happiness.
  • The Foolishness of Material Asking: Seeking material opulence or sense gratification from Kṛṣṇa is described as great foolishness. While the Lord easily grants such trifles, He keeps the most valuable gift—pure devotional service—hidden from the attached.
  • The Pure Devotee's Standard: A wise man attached to Kṛṣṇa wants no return for his service. The perfection of the Vaiṣṇava path is reached when one seeks only the favor of the guru and Kṛṣṇa, desiring only to give service rather than receive it.
