Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the conditioned souls have an intrinsic desire to associate. In the material world, this propensity manifests as wanting to associate with mundane organizations or seeking the company of others for sense gratification. However, when a person becomes fortunate, this desire is elevated, and they want to associate with a sadhu or pure devotee who can help cut the knot of material attachment. The ultimate perfection of this desire is to associate with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. While some aspire to associate with Lord Narayana in the Vaikuntha planets, the highest ambition of a pure Vaisnava is to associate with Lord Krsna in His eternal pastimes in Goloka Vrndavana, entering into the loving atmosphere of the gopis, Nanda Maharaja, mother Yasoda, and Srimati Radharani.

  • Seeking Genuine Spiritual Association: Instead of looking for mundane society or organizations, a sincere person wants the association of a pure devotee to learn how to end material existence, not how to improve it.
  • Elevating the Desire for Association: Even if one initially approaches a great soul with material motives, that pure association can lead to liberation. Ultimately, the true devotees want personal, eternal association with the Lord rather than merging into His impersonal effulgence.
  • The Aspiration of the Goddess of Fortune: The attraction to Kṛṣṇa is so great that even Laksmi, the chaste goddess of fortune, wanted to associate with Him in His cowherd boy form, recognizing Him as the original form of her husband.
  • The Highest Ambitions in Vṛndāvana: A pure devotee surpasses the desire for Vaikuntha opulence. Their highest ambition is to associate with Krsna and His intimate devotees in the beautiful, unalloyed atmosphere of Vrndavana.
