Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the conditioned soul constantly attempts to find happiness by adjusting the material world. Through economic development, technological advancement, and building skyscrapers, society tries to create a comfortable situation. However, trying to be happy by adjustment of this external energy is ultimately futile. Because the living entity is a spirit soul, material food and material arrangements cannot satisfy them. True happiness is only found by surrendering to Śrī Kṛṣṇa and adopting a spiritual life. The karmīs and jñānīs miss this secret of success, searching for peace through mundane adjustments or impersonal liberation, while the pure Vaiṣṇava simply engages in devotional service.

  • The Illusion of Economic Development: Modern society builds skyscrapers, roads, and motorcars with the hope of becoming happy, but these artificial adjustments only lead to frustration.
  • The Struggle of the Karmīs: Those who try to be happy through material adjustments are compared to a traveler climbing a hill full of thorns.
  • The Necessity of Spiritual Food: Because we are spirit souls, we cannot be satisfied by the external energy. We require a spiritual life to experience actual joy.
  • The Secret of Success: The perfect man, or the devotee, does not waste time trying to adjust the material world. Instead, they find their eternal happiness by surrendering to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
