Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the fundamental cause of material existence is the soul's desire to give up the eternal service of the Lord to become an independent enjoyer. Because of this artificial desire, the conditioned soul is placed into a temporary material body. Once embodied, the living entity develops a deep attachment to his physical form, home, and habits, refusing to give them up even when faced with constant miseries and pinpricks. The modern reluctance to adopt genuine spiritual life often stems from an unwillingness to give up sinful activities like meat-eating. However, Kṛṣṇa's ultimate instruction is for us to give up all other engagements and surrender completely unto Him. In contrast to the materialists, exalted devotees like Mahārāja Parīkṣit willingly give up vast opulences for the sake of the Lord. Sometimes, in the ecstasy of separation, a pure devotee may even want to give up his life to reunite with Kṛṣṇa, or pray like King Kulaśekhara to pass away while in a healthy state of mind. Yet, the Lord often preserves His devotees' bodies to execute His divine preaching mission on earth.

  • The Original Mistake: The conditioned soul's constitutional position is to serve the Supreme Lord, but out of envy, he artificially wants to give up this service to try and enjoy the material world.
  • Stubborn Attachment: Despite the inevitable suffering of material existence, conditioned souls stubbornly refuse to give up their bodies, their miserable household lives, or their sinful habits.
  • The Ultimate Instruction: Lord Kṛṣṇa demands that we give up all other mundane engagements and fully surrender unto Him, which instantly nullifies the cause and effect of material entanglement.
  • The Example of Great Souls: Unlike ordinary men, pure devotees like Mahārāja Parīkṣit easily give up immense wealth and youth to hear the glories of the Lord without distraction.
  • Ecstatic Separation: In the highest stages of devotion, a pure soul may want to give up his body out of intense separation from Kṛṣṇa, yet the Lord protects them to fulfill His own desires, as seen with Lord Caitanya and Sanātana Gosvāmī.
