Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the original cause of the living entity's entanglement in material existence is the envious desire to imitate the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because Kṛṣṇa is the supreme enjoyer, the conditioned soul falsely wants to usurp that position and lord it over material nature. The Lord, being fully merciful, creates the material cosmos as a temporary dreamland to give these rebellious souls the facility to act out their false desires. This disease of imitation manifests in many ways—from the mundane struggle for material opulence to the dangerous Māyāvādī philosophy that claims one can become God through mystic yoga. Furthermore, foolish people often try to imitate the actions of empowered personalities like Lord Śiva or great devotees like Haridāsa Ṭhākura, leading only to their own spiritual destruction. The only cure for this material disease is to abandon the false prestige of imitation, recognize one's eternal constitutional position as a servant, and surrender to Kṛṣṇa.

  • The Origin of the Material World: The entire material creation exists solely to accommodate the rebellious living entities who want to imitate Kṛṣṇa's position as the supreme enjoyer.
  • The Fall from Vaikuṇṭha: Because there cannot be a second enjoyer in the spiritual world, any soul who desires to imitate God's supremacy instantly falls down into the temporary realm of material existence.
  • The Disease of False Supremacy: The root of all sinful activity is the deep-seated propensity to imitate Kṛṣṇa by accumulating wealth, followers, and false prestige, or by philosophically claiming to be God.
  • The Danger of Imitating Great Souls: Ordinary conditioned souls invite disaster when they attempt to imitate the extraordinary feats of powerful personalities like Lord Śiva or highly advanced Vaiṣṇavas.
  • The Futility of Imitation: Just as a monkey is killed when it foolishly attempts to imitate a sawman, the living entity spiritually destroys himself when he attempts to artificially imitate the Supreme Lord.
