Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the supreme destination of a living entity is entirely dependent on his free will and his ultimate desire. The fundamental choice is whether one wants to remain in the material world to exploit nature or return to the spiritual world to serve the Supreme Lord. Conditioned souls, captivated by sense gratification, family attachments, and the bodily concept of life, stubbornly want to remain in material existence. Because Krsna perfectly reciprocates with everyone's desire, He supplies the exact conditions for them to remain as they wish—whether as a fruitive worker on earth, a demon, a hog, or even a tree standing naked for thousands of years. Conversely, pure devotees who possess complete spiritual knowledge never desire to merge into the Absolute or occupy the post of the Lord. Recognizing their constitutional position, they simply want to remain the eternal, ever-existing servants of Krsna. By remaining fixed in this humble service, great personalities like Lord Brahma, Lord Siva, and the gopis receive the ultimate protection and mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

  • The Free Will to Choose: Every living entity is given the independence to choose their destination. If one wants to remain in the cycle of birth and death to enjoy the senses, Krsna allows it, but the door to the spiritual world is always open for those who choose it.
  • The Entanglement of the Gṛhamedhī: Materialists are deeply attached to their homes, societies, and families. Because they want to remain in this bodily conception, their promotion to the spiritual realm is completely blocked.
  • The Path of Degradation: Those who adamantly want to remain in ignorance, acting as demons or engaging in unrestricted sense gratification, are eventually forced to remain in the darkest, most degraded species of life, such as animals or trees.
  • The Perfect Aspiration: The ultimate sign of complete knowledge is the rejection of the desire to merge with God. A true Vaisnava only wants to remain in his original, constitutional position as an instrument and servant of Krsna.
  • Divine Protection: When a devotee sincerely wants to remain engaged in the Lord's devotional service, Krsna becomes extremely merciful and actively protects them from the manifold dangers of the material world.
