Theme Analysis

To protect his disciples from the subtle compromises dictated by the material energy, Śrīla Prabhupāda established firm boundaries defining exactly what a practitioner "shall not" do. These uncompromising instructions serve as a spiritual fortress, guarding the purity of the movement and ensuring that devotees remain entirely dependent on the Supreme Lord. By strictly rejecting artificiality, personal convenience, and false expectations, the disciples guarantee their safe passage back to Godhead.

  • Uncompromising Daily Duties: No matter how busy a devotee becomes with managerial or preaching tasks, they shall not forget to complete their sixteen rounds, nor shall they forget Lord Viṣṇu for even a moment.
  • Rejecting Artificiality and Speculation: The movement must remain strictly authorized. Devotees shall not make their own independent plans, manufacture their own songs, or appear to the public merely as musical performers.
  • Sacrificing Personal Convenience: Spiritual life requires total surrender. A sincere disciple shall not pray for their own personal convenience, nor shall they whimsically move Deities or allow their minds to remain vacant and susceptible to māyā.
  • Shattering False Expectations: Devotees shall not harbor the false expectation of finding a flawless utopia, even within the spiritual society. Simultaneously, they shall not artificially reject practical utilities like electricity or unnecessarily violate government laws.
  • Protecting Preaching and Unity: To maintain the global impact of the mission, leaders shall not create absolute territorial divisions ("my zone/his zone"), nor shall they compromise the direct, door-to-door retail distribution of transcendental literature by selling to stores.
