Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda heavily critiques the consumption of wine, identifying it as a pillar of sinful life, or ugra-karma, and a primary symptom of the degraded Kali-yuga civilization. He explains that wine drinking permanently destroys purity—just as a single drop of wine ruins a whole pot of milk. Even the so-called religious practices that offer wine to demigods on the pravṛtti-mārga are meant strictly for restriction, not for unrestricted indulgence. However, showing his supreme compassion, Śrīla Prabhupāda also instructs that if a drunkard simply remembers that the taste of wine is Kṛṣṇa, they can begin the process of spiritual purification.

  • The Impurity of Intoxication: Wine is fundamentally impure. Even a single drop can contaminate a large quantity of pure milk, and a pot used for wine is considered permanently ruined according to Vedic standards.
  • The Root Cause of Irreligiosity: Intoxication is intimately connected with meat-eating and illicit sex. Together, these sinful habits degrade society and make it impossible to establish true religious principles.
  • Restriction Through Rituals: Although certain lower modes of worship allow the offering of wine, these concessions are meant to restrict the conditioned soul's natural lower propensities, not to encourage unrestricted consumption.
  • The Ultimate Purification: In his boundless mercy, Śrīla Prabhupāda advises that even one hopelessly addicted to wine can begin spiritual life by consciously remembering that the taste of the drink is Kṛṣṇa.
