Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category addresses the proper application of human energy. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the profound Vedic conclusion that material happiness and distress are predestined by one's karma. Just as miseries come upon us without our invitation or effort, the allotted happiness of this life will also come without endeavor. Therefore, wasting human life endeavoring for economic development or sense gratification is foolish. Instead, one's entire endeavor must be directed toward self-realization and devotional service, because pure love of Godhead cannot be achieved without sincere personal effort. Furthermore, the supreme absolute nature of God is revealed in His ability to create, maintain, and annihilate the universes completely without physical or personal endeavor.

  • The Futility of Material Endeavor: Material happiness and distress are available in all planetary systems and come automatically according to destiny. One cannot change this allotted quota, so one should not unnecessarily endeavor for material improvement.
  • The Automatic Results of Devotional Service: When one sincerely endeavors for Kṛṣṇa consciousness, liberation and detachment from the material world manifest automatically. A pure devotee acquires all transcendental qualities without making separate endeavors for knowledge or mystic powers.
  • The Supreme Lord's Effortless Potency: The Supreme Personality of Godhead is so powerful that He feeds trillions of living entities, manages the cosmic manifestation, and vanquishes demons simply by His will, entirely without personal endeavor.
  • The Necessity of Spiritual Endeavor: While material things come without effort, the highest perfection of life—pure devotional service—cannot be attained without earnest, personal endeavor and dedication to the instructions of the spiritual master.
