Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the material body is a complex mechanism composed of various gross and subtle elements, including the ten senses. Among these, human beings possess five working senses, or organs of action, which include the hands, legs, speech, anus, and genitals. These senses are produced from material egoism in the mode of passion and function under the direct supervision of the mind. Attempting to artificially force these active senses to stop working is completely impossible and dangerous. Instead, true control is achieved when the working senses are purified and fully engaged in the transcendental loving service of Kṛṣṇa.

  • The Structure of the Material Body: The physical framework consists of twenty-four material elements, including the five elements, the mind, the five knowledge-gathering senses, and the five working senses, all supervised by the soul.
  • The Organs of Action and Their Objects: The five working senses are specifically identified as speech, hands, feet, anus, and genitals, and their respective operations include speaking, movement, handling, evacuation, and sexual intercourse.
  • The Mind as the Supreme Controller: Acting as the central driver or owner of the material carriage, the mind regulates and directs both the knowledge-acquiring organs and the active instruments of action.
  • Purification Over Artificial Suppression: Forcing the active organs to cease their functions is an exercise in futility that leads to hypocrisy; instead, one must purify the senses by engaging them in devotional service.
