Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the unique position and paradoxes surrounding the worshipers of Lord Śiva. Although Lord Śiva himself leads a life of extreme austerity and renunciation, his followers are often blessed with immense material wealth. This occurs because Lord Śiva's consort, Goddess Durgā, is the superintendent of the material energy and readily bestows material facilities to glorify her husband. Consequently, many materialistic demons, such as Rāvaṇa and Hiraṇyakaśipu, became his worshipers specifically to gain worldly power. Furthermore, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that a large section of Lord Śiva's worshipers are mayavadi philosophers who seek to merge into the impersonal effulgence. However, if one truly understands Lord Śiva as the greatest Vaisnava and worships him as a pure devotee of Lord Saṅkarṣaṇa, the worshiper can achieve actual liberation from false ego rather than mere material entanglement.

  • The Paradox of Material Opulence: Despite Lord Śiva living a completely renounced life without even a house, his worshipers often attain vast material wealth through the blessings of his wife, Goddess Durgā.
  • The Demoniac Worshipers: Because Lord Śiva easily grants material benedictions, many great demons and materialists approach him strictly for gaining immense power and opulence.
  • The Impersonalist Connection: A significant portion of Lord Śiva's worshipers are impersonalists and mayavadi philosophers, largely influenced by Śrīpāda Śaṅkarācārya's teachings.
  • True Devotion and Protection: When one worships Lord Śiva correctly as a pure devotee of the Supreme Lord, they can be freed from false ego and receive his supreme protection, as demonstrated in the history of King Bāṇāsura.
