Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the fundamental disease of the conditioned soul is the habit of wrongly thinking. Under the spell of material illusion (māyā), living entities wrongly think that they are independent enjoyers, that they are the proprietors of their temporary bodies and possessions, and that material advancement will bring them ultimate happiness. The most dangerous manifestation of wrongly thinking is the Māyāvādī misconception—falsely believing that the tiny living entity is absolutely equal to God, or that the Supreme Lord's form is made of material elements. Whether it is a mundane materialist wrongly thinking there is no creator, or an impersonalist wrongly thinking they can become the Supreme, all such mentalities keep the soul heavily trapped in ignorance. True liberation is achieved only when one is freed from this false conditioning and rightly understands their eternal position as a servant of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

  • The Illusion of Material Happiness: The materialist wrongly thinks that wealth, power, and temporary comforts equate to happiness. In reality, these individuals are simply prisoners in the clutches of māyā, blind to the constant dangers of material existence.
  • False Proprietorship and Independence: Because of ignorance, conditioned souls falsely claim ownership over their bodies, land, and resources. They wrongly think they are independent controllers, failing to recognize that everything ultimately belongs to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • The Māyāvādī Misconception: The most severe form of wrongly thinking is the impersonal philosophy, which falsely asserts that the living entity is equal to God in all respects. Such dangerous misconceptions prevent the soul from engaging in authentic devotional service.
  • Misunderstanding the Supreme Lord's Form: Atheists and impersonalists incorrectly think that Śrī Kṛṣṇa assumes a body made of material elements, or that He loses His separate existence when He expands. These āsurika (demoniac) concepts are thoroughly rejected by pure devotees who possess true spiritual knowledge.
