Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Yamadūtas are the fierce and terrifying order carriers of Yamarāja, the lord of death. Their primary duty is to arrest sinful living entities at the time of death, extracting the soul from the heart with ropes, and dragging them to the hellish planets for punishment and purification. However, the history of Ajāmila vividly demonstrates the limits of their jurisdiction. When the Yamadūtas attempted to arrest the highly sinful Ajāmila, he inadvertently chanted the holy name of Nārāyaṇa out of fear. Immediately, the beautiful and effulgent Viṣṇudūtas arrived, cut the ropes of the Yamadūtas, and forbade them from taking him. Baffled by this interference, the Yamadūtas argued on the basis of Vedic karma and dharma, unable to comprehend how two supreme judges could exist. Returning to Yamarāja in defeat, they were instructed about the supreme, transcendental position of Lord Viṣṇu and His pure devotees. Yamarāja strictly warned the Yamadūtas never to approach a surrendered soul, establishing that pure devotional service and the chanting of the holy name completely protect one from the fearful agents of death.

  • The Constables of Death: The Yamadūtas act as the cosmic police force for Yamarāja, forcefully arresting sinful souls and dragging them to hellish conditions to suffer the reactions of their impious acts.
  • The Arrest of Ajāmila: Evaluating only his external sinful life, the Yamadūtas attempted to extract Ajāmila's soul, completely unaware of the purifying potency awakened when he helplessly chanted the name of Nārāyaṇa.
  • The Intervention of the Viṣṇudūtas: The Yamadūtas were stunned by the arrival of the Viṣṇudūtas, whose beautiful, lotus-eyed, and effulgent forms starkly contrasted with their own fierce and ugly features.
  • The Debate on Religious Principles: Challenged by the Viṣṇudūtas, the Yamadūtas accurately quoted the Vedas to define standard piety and impiety, yet they remained ignorant of the superior, transcendental religious principle of devotional service.
  • Supreme Protection for Devotees: Yamarāja ultimately enlightened the Yamadūtas about Lord Viṣṇu's supremacy, warning them that anyone who chants the holy name or wears the symbols of a Vaiṣṇava is completely immune to their jurisdiction.
