Theme Analysis

Kṛṣṇa is feared by fear personified, yet He becomes afraid before Mother Yaśodā's stick. Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that fear of Kṛṣṇa may arise from His supreme power, His universal form, His justice toward demons, or His overwhelming beauty and opulence. Still, the highest devotional relationships go beyond fear, for the intimate devotees of Vṛndāvana love Kṛṣṇa as their child, friend, or beloved.

  • Supreme Majesty: Demons, cowards, and offenders become afraid when they confront Kṛṣṇa's power. Their fear reveals that no one can stand independently before the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • Reverential Fear: Arjuna became fearful after seeing Kṛṣṇa's universal form and remembering his familiar dealings with Him. Such fear comes from suddenly perceiving the Lord's unlimited opulence.
  • Intimate Love: The cowherd boys of Vṛndāvana are never afraid of Kṛṣṇa because their relationship is full of friendship. Mother Yaśodā's love is even more astonishing, because Kṛṣṇa accepts fear before her affection.
  • Devotional Paradox: Everyone is afraid of Kṛṣṇa, yet Kṛṣṇa becomes afraid of His devotee. This paradox reveals the sweetness of devotional love beyond awe and reverence.
