Theme Analysis
In the theology of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, the Supreme Lord never acts alone; He is always accompanied by His divine energies and expansions. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Balarāma is the first plenary expansion of Lord Kṛṣṇa, non-different from the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. He is the original Saṅkarṣaṇa. To facilitate the Supreme Lord's pastimes, Balarāma always appears alongside Kṛṣṇa. During the advent of Lord Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana, Balarāma appeared just prior to Kṛṣṇa to prepare the way and assist Him in His divine activities.
The purpose of Balarāma's appearance perfectly aligns with Kṛṣṇa's mission. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the two brothers descended to the earth to relieve the world of the immense burden created by ambitious, militaristic kings. Their joint appearance was explicitly meant to reestablish religious principles, protect the pious devotees, and chastise the impious demons. Even though they appeared in the families of kṣatriyas and vaiśyas, great sages and brāhmaṇas recognized their supreme position and offered them the highest respect.
The specific details of Balarāma's appearance demonstrate the Lord's absolute control over material nature. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes the profound mystery of His birth, wherein Balarāma first appeared in the womb of Devakī but was mystically transferred by yogamāyā to the womb of Rohiṇī to protect Him from Kaṁsa. Furthermore, Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights the supreme compassion of the Lord by explaining Balarāma's most recent appearance. In the current Age of Kali, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma have appeared simultaneously as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu. In this golden incarnation, Lord Nityānanda (Balarāma) exhibits unparalleled mercy, actively seeking out and delivering the most fallen and degraded souls.
- The Original Expansion: Lord Balarāma is the first plenary expansion of Kṛṣṇa (the original Saṅkarṣaṇa) and appears alongside the Supreme Lord to assist in all His transcendental pastimes.
- The Divine Mission: The appearance of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma serves a unified purpose: to relieve the earth's burden, annihilate demonic forces, and reestablish pure religious principles.
- The Mystery of His Birth: Demonstrating the power of yogamāyā, Balarāma appeared in the womb of Devakī and was miraculously transferred to the womb of Rohiṇī.
- The Mercy of Lord Nityananda: For the deliverance of the heavily conditioned souls in Kali-yuga, Lord Balarāma appeared as Lord Nityānanda, distributing causeless mercy without considering one's qualifications.
