Theme Analysis

The fundamental question of spiritual philosophy—"What is the Absolute Truth?"—is perfectly answered in the very first aphorism of the Vedānta-sūtra: janmādy asya yataḥ. Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly translates this as "The Absolute Truth is He from whom everything emanates." According to the Vedic literature, the entire cosmic manifestation, encompassing both the inferior material elements and the superior spiritual sparks (the living entities), is a direct emanation from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa. Through His partial expansion as Mahā-Viṣṇu, millions of universes emanate from the pores of His body with every exhalation, only to be withdrawn again upon His inhalation.

Because everything emanates from the Supreme Lord, the philosophy of the Māyāvādīs—who claim that the material world is false (mithyā)—is fundamentally incorrect. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, if the source is the Absolute Truth, its emanations must also be true. The material world is not false; it is simply temporary. Furthermore, the Lord possesses an inconceivable mathematical perfection described in the Īśopaniṣad: although infinite, complete universes continually emanate from Him, He never diminishes; He remains the complete, inexhaustible balance.

The concept of emanation also demystifies the impersonal Brahman. The blinding brahmajyoti, which many empiric philosophers mistake for the ultimate reality, is simply the spiritual effulgence emanating from the transcendental body of Kṛṣṇa in Goloka Vṛndāvana. While the material scientists study the mechanical laws of integration, they fail to understand the supreme cognizant Person (abhijña) behind it all. Ultimately, true knowledge is realized when the conditioned soul recognizes that all energies, laws, and living beings emanate from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and therefore, everything must be engaged in His loving service.

  • The Absolute Definition: The Vedānta-sūtra and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam define the Absolute Truth (janmādy asya yataḥ) as the original, cognizant person from whom everything emanates.
  • The Cosmic Breath: Infinite universes emanate as molecular particles from the pores of Mahā-Viṣṇu's body during His exhalation and enter back into Him during inhalation.
  • The Inexhaustible Balance: Despite infinite energies and complete universes emanating from the Lord, He remains entirely complete and unaffected by the material modes.
  • The Source of the Brahman: The impersonal brahmajyoti is not the ultimate truth; it is merely the glowing spiritual rays emanating from the personal body of the Supreme Lord.
