To manage the affairs of the material creation, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa, expands Himself into three primary puruṣa-avatāras: Mahā-Viṣṇu (Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu), Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Mahā-Viṣṇu is the original creator of the total material energy. As He lies in the Causal Ocean in yoga-nidrā (mystic slumber), millions of universes emanate from the pores of His transcendental body with every exhalation. These universes appear as molecular seeds that float in the Brahman effulgence. When Mahā-Viṣṇu inhales, all these universes are withdrawn and enter back into His body.
Within every individual universe that emanates from Mahā-Viṣṇu, there expands a Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. From the navel of Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, a magnificent lotus flower emanates. Atop this lotus, Lord Brahmā—the first created being and the universal manager—takes his birth. Because Brahmā is not born of an ordinary father and mother, but directly from this divine lotus, he is celebrated as Svayambhū.
Additionally, the Vedic literatures confirm that all the prominent incarnations who descend into the material universe—such as Lord Rāma, Narasiṁha, Varāha, and Vāmana—are emanations from Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, the localized Supersoul. Ultimately, however, it must be understood that Lord Kṛṣṇa is the cause of all causes, serving as the original source from whom Mahā-Viṣṇu Himself emanates.
The profound purifying potency of the Lord is further demonstrated by the River Ganges. The Ganges is considered the most sacred river in the universe because its waters emanate directly from the lotus toe of Lord Viṣṇu. This transcendental water is so pure and powerful that it eradicates the material distresses of the conditioned souls and is received upon the head with great devotion by exalted demigods, including Lord Śiva.
