Theme Analysis

The Absolute Truth is one, but He eternally expands into many for His transcendental pleasure and cosmic administration. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that God's plenary portions (aṁśa) and portions of the plenary portions (kalā)—such as Lord Balarāma, Advaita Ācārya, and the various puruṣa-avatāras—are as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. By one of His plenary portions, the Paramātmā, the Lord enters into every universe, every planet, and even every atom, sustaining the entire material creation. One must carefully distinguish between these viṣṇu-tattva plenary portions, who are fully supreme, and the infinitesimal living entities (jīva-tattva), who are eternally His subordinate, separated parts and parcels.

  • The Primeval Fountainhead: Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, or Govinda, is the primeval origin of all incarnations, plenary portions, and parts of the plenary portions.
  • The Puruṣas of the Material Creation: To generate the cosmos, the Lord expands into the three puruṣa-avatāras who lie down on the spiritual oceans to create and maintain all universes.
  • Entering the Universes and Atoms: The Supreme Lord's magnitude is so inconceivable that by His plenary portion, He permeates both the gigantic universes and the smallest atomic particles.
  • The Supersoul as the Inner Guide: Accompanied by the living entity in the heart, the Paramātmā serves as the eternal friend, witness, and ultimate director of intelligence.
  • Expansions of Divine Grace: Transcendental personalities like Lord Balarāma, Advaita Ācārya, and Lord Lakṣmaṇa are direct plenary portions executing the mission of the Supreme Lord.
  • Absolute Equality of the Portions: Unlike the jīva soul, every plenary portion (viṣṇu-tattva) is absolute, infallible, and fully equal in potency to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • The Destinies of the Worshipers: Worshipers of different plenary portions attain various spiritual destinations, while devotees of Kṛṣṇa and Rāma enter the supreme eternal abodes of Vaikuṇṭha and Goloka.
