Theme Analysis

Understanding the true nature of the Absolute Truth requires correctly interpreting the negative descriptions found in Vedic literature. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, when the śruti-mantras and the Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad state that the Supreme Lord has no hands, no legs, and no eyes, it absolutely does not mean that He is an impersonal, dumb stone. Rather, it means that God has no material body and no mundane senses like ours. His form is entirely sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha (eternal, full of knowledge and bliss). With His spiritual senses, He can walk faster than anyone, accept all offerings, and perfectly see the past, present, and future. The Māyāvādī philosophers who constantly blaspheme the Lord by claiming He has no form, no head, and no activities remain grievous offenders for many lifetimes.

Because the Supreme Personality of Godhead is completely spiritual and self-sufficient, He has no material designations or false ego. Words like nirahaṁ do not mean He has no identity; they mean He has no material identity. As the supreme controller of time and the modes of nature, He has no fear, no subjection to the laws of karma, and no connection to material qualities.

Furthermore, because the Lord is absolutely complete in Himself, He has no unfulfilled desires, no personal interests, and no need to perform wonderful activities just to improve His position or achieve a result. He only acts to set an example for human society or to please His pure devotees. Being the supreme father, God is perfectly neutral (sama); He has no enemies and no mundane friends. He does not arbitrarily make one person poor and another rich; rather, He simply awards the results of the living entities' own work. Yet, despite having no material obligations, the Lord graciously accepts our loving service, proving that His transcendental personality is full of infinite mercy and reciprocation.

  • No Material Form: When the Vedas state that God has no hands or legs, it means He has no material body; His form is completely transcendental and spiritual.
  • No Impersonal Void: The Māyāvādī claim that God has no identity or activities is a negative way of denying His existence and is deeply offensive.
  • No Material Obligation: The Lord is completely full in Himself; He has no unfulfilled desires, no subjection to karma, and no need to perform activities for personal gain.
  • No Enemies or Friends: God is perfectly equal to all living entities; He has no mundane friends or enemies, but simply reciprocates according to our desires and surrender.
