Theme Analysis

The relationship between God and the living beings is the most fundamental subject of Vedic knowledge. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the living beings are the marginal energy of the Supreme Lord, eternally existing as His fragmental parts and parcels. Because they are emanations from the Supreme Spirit, the living beings are qualitatively one with God. However, this qualitative oneness does not mean absolute equality. A true Vaiṣṇava vehemently rejects the monistic (Māyāvāda) philosophy that attempts to put God and the living being on the same level. The Lord is infinite, all-powerful, and the supreme controller of the illusory energy (māyā), whereas the living being is infinitesimal and prone to being covered by that same illusion.

The constitutional position of the living being is to render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord. Every living entity is eternally related to God in one of five primary humors: śānta (neutrality), dāsya (servitorship), sakhya (friendship), vātsalya (parenthood), or mādhurya (conjugal love). When a living being desires to enjoy independently, ignoring this relationship, the Lord covers them with forgetfulness and places them in the material world. Even in this fallen state, the Lord does not abandon them. He expands as the Paramātmā (Supersoul) to sit within the heart of every living being, acting as the supreme witness, friend, and maintainer, supplying all necessities according to their karma.

The ultimate goal of the material creation is not for the living beings to suffer, but to give them a chance to rectify their rebellious mentality. The Lord repeatedly descends to the material world—or sends empowered representatives—to perform wonderful pastimes and disseminate the Vedic knowledge, acting as the spiritual master from both within and without. The supreme perfection of life occurs when the living being ceases their false attempts to be a lord or a mendicant, surrenders to the Supreme Lord, and is reinstated in their original constitutional position. In that liberated state, the living being returns home, back to Godhead, to eternally enjoy full freedom and blissful reciprocation with the Lord.

  • The Marginal Energy: The living beings are eternal, fragmental parts and parcels of the Supreme Lord, qualitatively one with Him but quantitatively minute.
  • Rejecting Monism: A genuine devotee never accepts the philosophy that places the tiny living being on an equal level with the omnipotent Supreme Lord.
  • The Supreme Maintainer: Even in the material world, the Lord accompanies every living being as the Paramātmā, witnessing their actions and fulfilling their desires.
  • The Goal of Creation: The material world is a facility for rebellious souls to rectify their mentality, surrender to the Lord, and revive their eternal loving relationship with Him.
