Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that Śrīla Vyāsadeva's greatest contribution is his personal, unadulterated explanation of the Absolute Truth. Although Vyāsadeva divided the original Veda into four and compiled supplementary literatures like the Mahābhārata and the Purāṇas to guide the general populace, he still felt dissatisfied because in none of these works were the transcendental activities of the Supreme Lord properly explained. Under the instruction of Nārada Muni, Vyāsadeva compiled the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam to explicitly explain the philosophical aphorisms of his own Vedānta-sūtra. He established from the very first verse (janmādy asya yataḥ) that the Absolute Truth, the primeval cause of all causes, is a cognizant, transcendental person. Vyāsadeva's personal explanations deliberately protect the Vedic conclusions from the imaginary interpretations of Māyāvādī philosophers, proving definitively that pure devotional service is the ultimate reality, far beyond impersonal liberation.

  • The Supreme Person: Vyāsadeva clearly explains that the Absolute Truth is not an impersonal void or energy, but a supreme, cognizant person possessing diverse, inconceivable potencies.
  • The Author's Explanation: Because the Vedānta-sūtra is difficult for the common man to grasp, the author himself, Vyāsadeva, personally explained its true meaning through the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
  • The Primeval Cause: Through his explanations, Vyāsadeva establishes that the source of all emanation, maintenance, and destruction is the eternally effulgent, fully independent Lord Kṛṣṇa.
  • Refuting Māyāvāda Philosophy: Māyāvādī philosophers have the audacity to reject Vyāsadeva's clear explanations, attempting instead to establish imaginary doctrines that deny the personal form and energies of the Lord.
  • The Essence of Vedic Knowledge: The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam represents the culmination of Vyāsadeva's literary work, collecting the essence of the Upaniṣads and providing the perfect explanation of the oṁkāra and the Absolute Truth.
