Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the ultimate sanction for life and death rests exclusively with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. A fundamental tenet of Vedic philosophy is that if Kṛṣṇa wants to protect a devotee, no one can kill him; conversely, if Kṛṣṇa wants to kill a demon, no demigod or material power can offer protection. In the material world, the desire to kill usually arises from demoniac envy, self-interest, and bodily identification. Demons constantly scheme to kill the innocent, the devotees, and even the Lord Himself. However, violence is not inherently evil when utilized in the service of the Lord. Pure devotees, who are normally perfectly peaceful and nonviolent, exhibit righteous anger and a willingness to kill when the Lord, His devotees, or religious principles are attacked. Ultimately, the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement represents the highest form of nonviolence, for Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu descended not to kill the bodies of the demons with weapons, but to kill their nefarious, demoniac mentality by distributing pure love of God.

  • The Supreme Will: The absolute control over life and death belongs to Kṛṣṇa. If the Lord desires to protect someone, they are invincible, and if He desires to kill someone, no demigod can save them.
  • Demoniac Envy: The materialistic, demoniac mentality is characterized by the envious desire to kill pure devotees, innocent animals, and even the Supreme Lord, simply to protect one's own bodily interests or false prestige.
  • Righteous Violence: Although devotees are by nature nonviolent, they will readily take up arms to kill or punish offenders when religious principles, innocent creatures, or pure Vaiṣṇavas are threatened, as demonstrated by Mahārāja Parīkṣit and Lord Caitanya.
  • Killing the Inner Demon: Spiritual advancement requires killing the demons of misunderstanding and material attachment within one's own heart, a process exemplified by Arjuna on the Battlefield of Kurukṣetra.
  • The Ultimate Compassion: Instead of using weapons to kill the demons of Kali-yuga, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu exhibited the highest mercy by spreading Kṛṣṇa consciousness to kill their sinful propensities and grant them salvation.
